About Us
Company History and Background
Scott Byrd, President/Owner, Nebraska Home Improvement/Kitchens by Design.
Nebraska Home Improvement was founded in 1982 by Scott Byrd. For the first 8 years it was Scott and 3 carpenters. In the early 1990s Scott was able to expand the business into Nebraska Home Improvement/Kitchens by Design with the help of several key people and was able to produce larger additions and specialize in kitchen remodeling.
Kris Elsasser, Controller/Office Manager joined Kitchens by Design in September, 1992. She is responsible for making sure that all change orders are done and that our staff is taking good care of you and your project so that it runs efficiently from start to finish. If you have any money questions, she is the one to contact.
Jamie Tafoya (JT), Project Manager joined Kitchens by Design in October, 2007. Jamie has 11 years experience as a carpenter and project manager. When the job starts he will manage your job along with the lead carpenters. If you have any questions please feel free to contact him.
Rachael Wilmeth, Interior Designer joined Kitchens by Design in August, 2007. Rachael graduated from UNL with a degree in Interior Design. Rachael has 7 years experience as an Interior Designer. Rachael has a vast knowledge of the current trends and the hot new ideas to make sure your project is cutting edge. Her attention to detail will turn your new space into something both efficient and beautiful.
Gwen Rathman, AKBD - Associate Kitchen & Bath Designer. Gwen joined Kitchens by Design in July, 2007. Gwen graduated from University of Nebraska Kearney with a degree in Interior Design. The AKBD accreditation means that Gwen is a professional with documented experience and education in the kitchen and bath industry. Gwen has 4 years experience and is constantly taking Continuing Education classes to keep her accreditation. She is the one you want planning your space.
Tom Burroughs, Granite Shop Manager joined Kitchens by Design in August, 2004. Tom has over 18 years granite experience. Tom runs the granite shop and oversees all granite fabrication and installation. It is his responsibility to make sure that everything with your granite goes is right.
Tony Thiele, Lead Carpenter joined Kitchens by Design in January, 2000. Tony has over 12 years experience as a carpenter. Tony joined us as a Carpenters Assistant and worked his way up to a lead carpenter in 2003.
Jerry Potter, Lead Carpenter joined Kitchens by Design in August, 2003. Jerry has over 25 years experience as a carpenter.
Scott Kirkpatrick (Skit), Lead Carpenter joined Kitchens by Design in April, 2004. Scott started as a carpenters assistant and he too worked himself up to a lead carpenter. Scott has 13 years experience as a carpenter.
Doug Moore, Lead Carpenter joined Kitchens by Design in May, 2004. Doug has 20 years experience as a carpenter.
Brandon Vogel, Carpenter joined Kitchens by Design in October, 2006.
Rafael Orellano, Granite Assistant joined Kitchens by Design in July, 2008.
Jose Carbajal, Granite Assistant joined Kitchens by Design in December, 2009.
Matt Gusta, Carpenter Assistant joined Kitchens by Design in April, 2010.

Process
Kitchens by Design can't help you if we don't know you. Our first meeting with you will be in your home. From this in home interview, we will create a new & exciting living space that fits your needs & your budget. All of this is at no charge to you. As we try to earn your business, you will decide if Kitchens by Design is the right company for you.
We specialize in transforming existing homes into beautiful new living spaces. Whether your home needs interior renovation, outdoor construction or an entirely new floor plan, were your remodeling contractor.
We oversee our projects with prompt professionalism. From estimates to design to construction to punch list and clean-up, we provide full-service project management.
What Now?
The next move is yours. You need to come into our showroom and meet us or you may choose to simply call Kitchens by Design to set up your first appointment or just fill out the contact page and well give you a call and set up the initial appointment.
In our meetings it is important, but not required, that all of the decision makers be present. Everyones opinion is important. This is the time that you would want to pull out your notebook or file of items youve collected over the years to incorporate into your new kitchen, bath, etc. Taste is obviously a very personal choice, and while we always like to show you the latest trends, we place a premium on listening to you and incorporating your own needs into your space. All thoughts need to be considered as we recreate your living space and you choose which company best meets your needs.
We offer complete design/build services. Our award winning combination of attention to detail and custom craftsmanship results in tailored concepts for each customer. We perform in-house design of both interior and exterior spaces. Our team approach combines expertise, management and exceptional results.
From the demolition of your old kitchen to the final appliance hookup in your new one, we can do it all.
Taking advantage of our full range of services minimizes the stress and bother of remodeling your home and saves you time and money.
Our Process
1.) Consultation and estimate - We offer a complimentary in-home design consultation. During this initial meeting we will discuss your needs and budget requirement. For kitchen and bath consultations, this results in a preliminary design and estimate.
2.) Design process - Once youve approved the preliminary design and estimated budget, a meeting is scheduled with you and Scott here at the showroom to view cabinetry and other items, in order to further refine the design. If you like what you see and want to execute the contract a deposit is requested along with the signed contract
3.) At this point you work with our 2 designers to go over every little detail so you can be confident that your project will be exactly what you want.
4.) Orders & Permits - Upon contract execution, well order all the products, organize all permits and applications necessary to complete your project and schedule the start date for your project construction.
5.) Construction - From demolition to cleanup, our experts will build to your exact specifications.
6.) Punch list - We walk through every square foot of your project to ensure complete customer satisfaction.
7.) Completion - Well complete your job on time and on budget.
